Classic City Beverages, the Athens distributor of Coors beer products, outdid all other Coors distributors in the nation, and Coors Brewing Co. Chairman Peter Coors visited Athens this past weekend to present the company with the Coors Founder's Award.
The Founder's Award is presented to the top performing Coors distributor in the United States for the entire year of 2006.
"This is huge," said Mike Addington, on-site manager with Classic City Beverages. "Very, very few distributors ever accomplish this."
The Coors Brewing Co. held a special award dinner Friday evening at the Classic Center to present the award and honor the Athens company's employees.
Classic City Beverages sold more than 1 million cases of Coors products in 2006. During the past three years, Classic City has seen sales of the Coors Light brand increase by 24 percent and sales of the Keystone Light brand grow by 204 percent, Classic City sales manager Gary Burrell said. Those figures surpassed all other Coors distributors in the country, he said.
Addington attributed Classic City's sales record to a changing and growing market.
"Coors and Keystone Light is huge for us this year," Addington said. "It's just a turn in sales; where this area has always been a Bud Light market, things are changing now."
Customer service played a large role in Classic City's sales as well, Addington said.
Classic City Beverages distributes beer and wine products to 36 counties in Northeast Georgia, and its routes extend to Gwinnett County to the west, Elberton to the east, Blue Ridge to the north and Monticello to the south. The company employs 62 people.
Coors currently serves as chairman of Coors Brewing Co. and vice chairman of Coors' parent company, Molson Coors. He is slated to serve as chairman of a new company, Miller Coors, expected to be created by a merger of Molson Coors and SABMiller in the coming months.
